ZINASU Gender Summit Targets Exploitation on Campus

The Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) has put gender exploitation on university and college campuses under the spotlight, arguing that students cannot meaningfully pursue their education while facing humiliation, exploitation and conditions that undermine their dignity.

The union is holding its Gender Summit with students from Mashonaland Province under the theme, “Student Dignity & the Struggle Against Gender Exploitation on Campus”.

ZINASU said access to lecture rooms alone was not enough to guarantee meaningful education, arguing that students must also be able to learn in environments that protect their safety, equality and dignity.

The union said basic needs, including food, accommodation and healthcare, were essential to students’ ability to learn and participate fully in academic life.

“Education cannot therefore be genuinely emancipatory where students are humiliated, exploited or denied the conditions needed to learn and participate with dignity,” ZINASU said.
