Police name five killed in Marondera helicopter crash

 

Police have identified the five people who died when a helicopter crashed at Kudenga Farm in Marondera on Wednesday.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police said the victims were businessman Wicknell Munodaani Chivayo, Lucy Rujeko Muteke, Saneliswe Magagula, pilot Calvin Tafirei Soda and co-pilot Courage Mutavirwa.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said forensic scientists and aviation experts had attended the crash site as investigations into the accident got underway.

“The Police therefore confirms that the helicopter had five occupants, namely; Wicknell Munodaani Chivhayo, Lucy Rujeko Muteke, Saneliswe Magagula, Calvin Tafirei Soda (pilot) and Courage Mutavirwa (co-pilot),” Nyathi said.

The helicopter crashed at Kudenga Farm on September 30, with police yet to establish the circumstances that led to the accident.

Nyathi said investigations were being conducted in conjunction with relevant experts and that further details would be released as the inquiry progresses.

“The Police in conjunction with the relevant experts, is conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding the helicopter crash. More information will be released as investigations unfold,” he said.

The cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed.

Police expressed their condolences to the families of those who died.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” Nyathi said.
