The Zimbabwe Republic Police has clarified that a man wanted in connection with a series of armed robberies and known as “Mambo Dhuterere” is not gospel musician Darlington Mutseta, who uses the same name as his stage identity.
The clarification came after the police initially identified the wanted suspect only by the nickname, triggering speculation on social media that the musician could be linked to the robbery cases.
In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, police said the suspect was a different person from the well-known musician.
“The ZRP clarifies that one of the outstanding suspects referred to as ‘Mambo Dhuterere’ is not the Zimbabwean musician known by that name,” police said.
The clarification followed an earlier announcement by police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi that three people had been arrested in connection with armed robberies reported in Ruwa, Rusape and Harare.
The arrested suspects are Tinei Makaripe, 47, Pungurayi Mukambachaza and Gabriel Mukambachaza, 41.

Police said four other suspects, identified as Khule Diva, Mambo Dhuterere, Kasongo and Senior Gama, were still at large.
The earlier statement did not give the real names or other identifying details of the four wanted suspects, leading to confusion over the identity of the person using the name “Mambo Dhuterere”.
Mutseta, who is known for his gospel music and hit song Dare Guru, responded to the speculation on social media, appearing to distance himself from the allegations and joking that he might have to change his stage name.
The confusion was later settled when police specifically stated that the wanted suspect was not the musician.
The robbery investigations involve a number of incidents, including a 13 September 2026 robbery at a company in Borders Estate, Ruwa, where US$108,000 was reportedly stolen.
Police allege that workers were attacked and restrained during the robbery.
The suspects have also been linked to robbery cases reported in Rusape and Southerton, Harare, earlier this year.
Police said investigations were continuing and appealed to anyone with information that could help locate the four outstanding suspects to report to the authorities.
