Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, was hospitalised on Monday after being stabbed at California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, where he is serving a 10-year sentence for shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion.
According to prison officials, the 31-year-old was attacked around 7:20 a.m. by another inmate, Santino Casio, who has since been placed in restricted housing pending investigation. Lanez is in fair condition.
A message posted on his official Instagram account stated he was stabbed 14 times — including wounds to his back, torso, head, and face — and suffered collapsed lungs. However, the update added that he is now breathing on his own, speaking normally, and thankful to be recovering.
In August 2023, Lanez was convicted on three felony counts — assault with a semi-automatic firearm, possession of a concealed, unregistered firearm, and negligent discharge — related to a July 2020 shooting incident involving Megan Thee Stallion (real name Megan Pete). She accused Lanez of shooting her in the feet following an argument after a party.
The case divided the hip-hop community and sparked broader discussions about the treatment of Black women in the music industry and criminal justice system. During the trial, Megan testified about the emotional and physical toll the incident had taken on her, including backlash and victim-blaming.
Lanez is currently appealing his sentence but was denied bond. Meanwhile, Megan’s legal team filed a petition in December accusing him of continued harassment through third parties while incarcerated. A judge extended her restraining order in January after prison records showed Lanez was allegedly using bloggers to spread misinformation about the case.
