Man Stabs Village Head Three Times

 

A 30-year-old Zvishavane man has been jailed for an effective four-and-a-half years after stabbing a village head during a confrontation and later vandalising his homestead.

Wellington Dzingisai of Mukamba Village was convicted by the Gweru Magistrates’ Court of attempted murder and malicious damage to property.

He was sentenced to 84 months in prison, with 24 months suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour and a further six months suspended on condition that he pays US$210 in restitution.

He will therefore serve an effective 54 months in prison.

The court heard that the incident occurred on August 7, 2026, at around 6pm at the village head’s homestead in Mukamba Village.

Prosecutors said Dzingisai confronted the village head, accusing him of undermining his presence in the area by reporting him to police whenever he returned to the village.

During the confrontation, Dzingisai allegedly threatened to kill the village head before pulling out a knife and stabbing him twice in the chest and once in the abdomen.

The injured village head was rushed to hospital for treatment.

After the stabbing, Dzingisai allegedly went outside and damaged 14 D11 window panes and the main door before fleeing from the scene.

The damage was valued at US$210.

A police report was subsequently made, leading to Dzingisai’s arrest.

In sentencing, the magistrate took into account the violent nature of the attack and the damage caused to the property.

The suspended portions of the sentence were conditional on Dzingisai not committing a similar offence within five years and paying US$210 in restitution.
