The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has acknowledged shortcomings in the country’s measurement systems during its 2024 World Metrology Day commemorations.
The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Noobzitha Ndlovu, highlighted the risk of consumers being “short changed” due to inaccurate measurements.
While Zimbabwe signed the Metre Convention in 2010 and the International Organisation of Legal Metrology in 2011, the country is still working on improving its legal metrology infrastructure.
The current system may allow for inaccurate measurements in commercial transactions, potentially harming consumers.
“It is the responsibility of Governments world over to ensure that weights and measures are done proficiently to mitigate risk of short changing the public,” said Minister Ndlovu.
The Ministry said it is taking steps to address the issue.
They are currently developing new legal metrology legislation and constructing a dedicated Legal Metrology Bureau. Additionally, the Trade Measures Department is working on implementing an Enterprise Resource Planning System and a competence-based training program for personnel.
These measures aim to ensure “fair trade, consumer protection, and accuracy in commercial transactions involving measurements”, according to the Minister.
The current system’s shortcomings could potentially act as a barrier to trade with other countries. Accurate measurements are essential for international trade, and Zimbabwe’s outdated systems could hinder its ability to participate in the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Ndlovu cited the importance of “embracing the use of standardised measurements in our day-to-day activities for sustainability”.
He highlighted the far-reaching consequences of inaccurate measurements, potentially impacting not just consumers but also the country’s economic standing.
With these improvements underway, the Minister said Zimbabwe is working to ensure that consumers are receiving the correct amount for their money and that the country is well-positioned for success in the global marketplace.
