The 30-year-old defender, who plays for reigning South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns, was travelling in a blue BMW with friends along Tudhope Street when they were approached by an unidentified man.
According to police, the man mistakenly believed Lunga and his companions were undercover traffic officers. He reportedly told them that people travelling in a vehicle ahead had just robbed him of R34,000.
