A woman from Mpopoma suburb in Bulawayo, Petronilla Mpofu, was granted a protection order by magistrate Sikhethile Moyo against her husband Denford Mpofu who has been beating her.

This comes after Petronilla had refused to have sex with her husband for almost three months after she found out that he had been infected with a sexually transmitted infection.

She said her marriage started having problems after her husband, Denford, got a job as a cross-border transporter in December last year.

“I’m applying for a protection order against my husband Denford Mpofu. I stumbled on his health card showing that he was infected with STI. When I confronted him, he became evasive and beat me up. After that I asked him to get tested for HIV but he refused.”

"I stumbled on a string of love messages that he had been exchanging with his lover.

When she visited him unexpectedly in South Africa, she found a patient card in a wardrobe while she was cleaning.

Upon checking it, she realised that her husband had been infected with an STI.

Petronilla said when she confronted him on why he had not told her that he had been infected with an STI, Denford turned violent before he insulted and beat her up.

She said after that she refused to engage in sex with him without protection.

She further said she advised him to go and get tested for HIV but he refused and said due to that she could not risk her life by sleeping with him without protection.

When she refuses to have sex with him, he starts beating her up while threatening to divorce her.

In response, Denford said he bashed her after she denied him his conjugal rights.

“I have never suffered from any STI-related illness. What I can admit is that I beat her up after she refused to sleep with me and she has been refusing since the end of January this year,” he said.

Denford was ordered not to physically and verbally abuse his wife.
