Indian Embassy takes consular services closer to Mutare community

The Embassy of India in Harare brought consular services closer to the Indian community in Mutare through a Consular Camp held at Hillside Golf Club on Friday as part of Sewa Pakhwada.

The initiative formed part of the wider Sewa Pakhwada programme, observed from 17 September to 2 October, which places emphasis on public service, community participation and engagement with the Indian diaspora.

The Mutare camp provided services including passport renewals, Police Clearance Certificates, Life Certificates for pensioners, miscellaneous consular services and Overseas Citizen of India updates.

Officials also accepted applications for the registration of new-born babies and their passports, subject to applicants meeting the required documentary requirements.

Community members were further able to raise queries, grievances and complaints and seek clarification on consular matters.

The outreach reflects a broader focus within India’s consular system on making services more accessible and responsive to citizens living abroad. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs says its SEWA platform allows applicants to apply online for various consular services, upload documents, undergo embassy verification and then attend the relevant mission or post for service.

Writing on Sewa Pakhwada, The Indian Panorama described the initiative as an opportunity to strengthen “public service, collective responsibility and community participation”, while highlighting efforts to make consular services more modern, convenient and citizen friendly.

The South Asian Times also reported that Indian missions around the world used this year’s Sewa Pakhwada for community focused activities covering areas such as civic participation, environmental awareness, and diaspora engagement.

For the Indian community in Mutare, the camp offered a direct point of engagement with embassy officials on documentation and other consular matters, extending the Embassy’s community outreach beyond Harare.
