Spikers Target Two Titles at Landmark UZ Handball Tournament

Spikers Handball Club are targeting titles in the senior men’s and Under-21 boys’ categories, while defending women’s champions Manyame Sparrows seek to retain their crown when the 10th edition of the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) Handball Tournament runs from October 23 to 25.

Spikers, popularly known as the Calvin Corner Boys, will be looking to improve on their fourth-place finish in the senior men’s competition last year as they pursue a double triumph at the three-day tournament.

Coach Calvin Banda said his charges were intensifying preparations for the competition, with the team determined to challenge for honours in both categories.

“We are working hard in training because we want to compete for the title in both the Under-21 and senior men’s categories. The preparations are going well, and the players understand what is expected of them,” said Banda.

He singled out goalkeepers Davis Nhongonhema and Tafadzwa Gonye as key players whose performances could prove decisive in the club’s title ambitions.

“Davis and Tafadzwa are important players in our setup. Their shot-stopping, reflexes and communication with the defence will be crucial as we prepare to face strong opposition,” he said.

On the women’s side, Manyame Sparrows will be aiming to consolidate their dominance after winning the senior women’s title at last year’s tournament.

Coach Alois Nyamhanga said his team was focused on defending its crown but remained mindful of the challenge posed by rival clubs.

“We respect every team coming to the tournament, but our focus is on defending our title. We are working on our fitness, teamwork and combinations to ensure that we are ready for the competition,” said Nyamhanga.

The tournament’s 10th edition is expected to attract teams from across Zimbabwe, providing a platform for clubs to showcase their talent while contributing to the development of handball in the country.

Last year’s competition saw Ajax HC win the senior men’s title, while Manyame Sparrows claimed the women’s crown. UZ Young Boys won the Under-21 boys’ category, with TG Academy emerging victorious in the Under-21 girls’ competition.

Beyond the team honours, the tournament will offer players an opportunity to impress national team selectors, with outstanding performances potentially opening the door to selection for national duty.

Trophies and medals will be awarded to the top teams, while individual accolades will recognise exceptional performers in categories including Most Valuable Player, Top Goalscorer and Best Goalkeeper.

With Spikers chasing a double and Manyame Sparrows seeking to preserve their status as women’s champions, the tournament promises a competitive three days as Zimbabwean handball clubs battle for supremacy at UZ.
