
A 22-year-old man from Zvimba has been sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison for raping a five-year-old girl at her homestead.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the minor, was convicted of rape as defined in Section 65 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act.
He appeared before the Chinhoyi Regional Magistrates' Court, where a regional magistrate handed down the sentence.
The State told the court that on June 23, 2026, at around 12pm, the five-year-old complainant was playing in the yard at her homestead while her grandmother was preparing food in the kitchen.
It was alleged that the accused went to the homestead and took the complainant into a thatched hut, where he raped her.

According to court papers, the complainant's grandmother noticed that the child was no longer playing in the yard and went to look for her. She found the accused in the act and immediately intervened, stopping him.
The grandmother then called for assistance from neighbours, leading to the accused being apprehended at the scene.
A report was made to the police, and the complainant was referred for a medical examination.
The State produced a medical affidavit confirming sexual abuse as part of its evidence.
The accused was arrested and remanded in custody, leading to his subsequent conviction.
He will serve an effective 15 years in prison.
