
Four men have each been sentenced to an effective seven years in prison for their role in a 2022 armed robbery in Eastlea, where cash, firearms and other valuables worth thousands of dollars were stolen from a business owner's home.
The Harare Regional Magistrates’ Court sentenced Darlington Chirenga (45), Josphat Muchenje (58), Stephen Matanhire (55) and David Nyakauru (49) after convicting them of armed robbery.
Each was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison. One year was suspended on condition of good behaviour, while a further four years were suspended on condition of restitution, leaving an effective seven-year prison term.

The robbery occurred on August 13, 2022, when the four men, armed with a pistol, a 15-pound hammer and iron bars, gained entry to the Eastlea residence using duplicate keys allegedly supplied by gardener and accomplice Raymond Motikari.
Once inside, they assaulted the maid and forced her into a bedroom before stealing a safe containing US$100,000, R300,000, a pistol loaded with 53 rounds of ammunition, house title deeds, a Samsung S8, an iPhone X and an iPhone XR.
The offenders loaded the safe into a silver Nissan NV200 and fled.
Investigations led to their arrest and the recovery of a broken safe, the getaway vehicle and cash amounting to US$14,720 and R66,000.
