
The third edition of the TG Handball Tournament delivered another thrilling showcase of Zimbabwean handball at the University of Zimbabwe courts in Harare over the weekend, with fierce competition, emerging talent and memorable performances highlighting the continued growth of the sport across the country.
At the centre of the celebrations were Manyame Sparrows Handball Club, who successfully defended their women's title to make history by winning all three editions of the TG Handball Tournament. Their latest triumph further cements their status as one of the dominant forces in Zimbabwean women's handball.
Manyame Sparrows finished top of the women's category ahead of City Stars HC, while Harare City HC claimed third place and Buse Hawks HC finished fourth. In the men's division, Black Rhinos HC emerged champions after an impressive campaign, followed by UZ Wildcats HC in second place, All Race Tribes HC in third and Ajax HC in fourth.
The tournament once again demonstrated the increasing competitiveness of handball in Zimbabwe, with clubs from different parts of the country displaying improved tactical discipline, fitness and determination throughout the two-day event.
Speaking to Zim Now after the tournament, Manyame Sparrows coach Alouis Nyanhanga praised his team for maintaining consistency and determination throughout the competition.
"I am very proud of the ladies for winning all three editions of the TG Tournament. It shows their commitment, discipline and hunger to keep improving every year. The competition is becoming tougher, which is good for Zimbabwean handball because teams are now competing at a very high level," said Nyanhanga.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the club's men's team, which was knocked out in the quarter-finals.
"Although the men's team did not go all the way, they played their level best. The standard of handball in Zimbabwe is rising, and every game is now highly competitive. That is exactly what we want to see as the sport continues to grow," he added.
UZ Wildcats HC coach Valentine Masaiti reflected positively on his team's performance after securing a second consecutive silver medal at the TG Handball Tournament.

Masaiti praised his players for their determination despite facing increasingly strong competition.
"The boys worked extremely hard despite the challenging competition that now exists in Zimbabwean men's handball. We have played four tournaments this year and, out of those four, this is the only one where we got silver. The rest were wins," said Masaiti.
He said the team was already focusing on its next challenge, the Sunshine Tournament.
"We are now preparing for the next tournament and working on correcting our mistakes. Last time we got silver and this time we got silver again, but next time we are hoping for a better result," he said.
Masaiti also singled out Munashe Wanyanya for his outstanding contribution during the tournament.
"He improved our game significantly. Not only him, but the whole team fought hard and gave their best throughout the tournament," he said.
City Stars HC captain Aunt Waishe Gavaza expressed pride in her team after finishing runners-up in the women's category and praised the growth of women's handball in Zimbabwe.
"This tournament showed how much women's handball is improving in Zimbabwe. Every team came prepared, and every match was competitive. I am proud of my teammates for showing heart, unity and determination throughout the competition. Finishing second motivates us to work even harder and come back stronger next time," said Gavaza.
Beyond the action on the court, the tournament also received support from Zim Now, which sponsored 10 cases of Ganzim water to help keep athletes hydrated throughout the competition.
The sponsorship contributed to the successful staging of the event and highlighted growing support for the development of handball in Zimbabwe.
