Zim’s Handball Talent Shines at 9th UZ Tournament

 

 

The 9th Edition of the University of Zimbabwe Handball Tournament, sponsored by ZB Bank, ended on Sunday at the UZ Sports Pavilion, bringing together top handball teams from across the country to compete for honours.

In the Men’s Division, Ajax HC emerged champions after a dominant display, clinching the gold medal ahead of Spartans HC, who took silver, while All Trace Tribes settled for bronze. Spikers HC finished fourth in a tightly contested division marked by intensity and discipline.

The Women’s Division was equally competitive, with Manyame Sparrows HC crowned champions after an impressive run characterized by consistency and composure. City Stars HC claimed second place, Madziwa HC came third, while Harare City HC finished fourth.

In the 21 & Under Boys category, UZ Young Boys (UZ YB) lifted the trophy after a dominant campaign, beating TG Academy to second place. Manyame Falcons finished third, and Bonafide HC came fourth.

Meanwhile, the 21 & Under Ladies division saw TG Academy clinch gold, followed by Harare City HC in second, Brymaton HC in third, and UZ Young Girls in fourth.

The tournament drew teams from several provinces, making it one of the most competitive and well-attended editions in recent years.

Zimbabwe Handball Federation Vice President Clemence Tauro praised the University of Zimbabwe for hosting the tournament, noting its continued improvement in organisation and quality. 

He said the Federation remains committed to creating more competitive platforms to help athletes gain exposure for national team selection.

Harare Province Chairperson Yvette Ashbunner commended the players for their discipline, noting that the event was free from any form of violence or misconduct — a reflection of the growing professionalism within the sport.

In his closing remarks, ZHF President Taurai Muberekwa thanked ZB Financial Holdings for sponsoring the event and urged more corporate partners to support the development of handball and other sporting disciplines in Zimbabwe.
