
A 30-year-old Waterfalls woman appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing attempted kidnapping charges after allegedly taking part in a plot to lure a woman into being forcibly admitted to a mental institution.
Elizabeth Magama appeared in court alongside allegations that she acted with an accomplice, Amariah Gumbo, who is still at large.
The complainant is Annalisa Muguwe.
The court heard that between May 12 and 16, 2026, the accused allegedly contacted the complainant claiming they wanted to discuss issues involving her ex-husband, Batisai Joe Matiza.
For safety reasons, the complainant chose to meet them at ZRP Rhodesville.

During the meeting, the accused allegedly told the complainant they had been hired by her ex-husband to assault her and requested to take a photograph of her looking distressed to send to him.
On May 14, the accused allegedly went to the complainant’s residence and forced her to record a video pretending she was being assaulted while tied to a tree after the ex-husband reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the earlier photograph.
The court further heard that on May 16, the accused returned to the complainant’s house claiming they had brought US$20,000 from her ex-husband to settle a breach of promise to marry dispute.
Once inside, they allegedly informed the complainant that they intended to take her to a mental institution at the instruction of her ex-husband, who was allegedly waiting outside.
The complainant’s brother intervened before the plan could be carried out.
Police were called to the scene, but one of the accused reportedly fled.
