Six Men Jailed for Destroying Home of ‘Spirit Medium’ in Hurungwe Land Dispute

Six men from Joga Village in Hurungwe have been sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment for demolishing a spirit medium’s house following a dispute over ancestral land.

The incident occurred in April 2025, when Kingrose Madyara, Wilson Kamudungwe, Kavande Norman, Progress Madyara, Tapiwa Chipazaure and Liberty Chipazaure destroyed a two-roomed house belonging to the complainant, citing disagreements over land ownership.

The complainant told the court that he was possessed by the spirit of Goremusandu, a recognised spirit medium, and was therefore entitled to occupy the land, which he said had been allocated to him by the village head in 2023.

The accused disputed the claim, describing it as a “scam”, before taking the law into their own hands and demolishing the structure.

The Karoi Magistrates’ Court sentenced the six to 10 months in prison, with three months suspended for five years, one month suspended on condition of restitution, and the remaining six months suspended on condition that they each perform 210 hours of community service.
