Concern swept through social media  after Federico, an Argentinian hitchhiker travelling across Zimbabwe, seemingly vanished without a trace.

Last heard from in Masvingo on Thursday, July 24, Federico was reportedly en route to Chimanimani when all contact ceased. A Twitter post sounding the alarm circulated widely "Federico, an Argentinian who is hitchhiking around Zim, hasn’t been heard from for a week, last contact was from Masvingo on Thursday July 24, he was on his way to Chimanimani. If anyone has seen or spoken to him, please let us know."

When  ZimNow spoke to individuals close to the situation that the mystery was resolved. The explanation was far more than many had imagined,  Federico had simply run out of  data bundles. Without connectivity, he was unable to contact his family, who, unaware of the technical hitch, grew increasingly worried. Once he regained connection, he was able to reassure everyone that he was safe and well.

In true Zimbabwean fashion, the comments on the original post ranged from humorous to insightful,  One user quipped, “Maybe he has gotten a farm where he's now farming,” suggesting that Federico may have settled down with a Zimbabwean partner.

Another added, “In Zim either he faced a power blackout, no cell network or he is married and doesn’t want interference from his relatives!! Safest country ever,” blending sharp observation with a dose of local realism.
