President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the road accident that claimed 17 lives along Seke Road on Tuesday a national disaster, as Government moves to take full responsibility for the victims' funerals.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, during a memorial service held at Doves Funeral Services in Chitungwiza on Wednesday morning.
Minister Garwe, addressing grieving families and mourners, conveyed the President’s condolences and said the State would ensure that all the victims received dignified burials.
“This is not just a family tragedy, but a national one. As Government, we will walk with you through this painful time,” said Minister Garwe.
“The loss of 17 lives in a single accident has shaken the nation, and it is our duty to stand with the bereaved.”
He said the declaration meant that the government would cover all funeral expenses and provide material support to the families of the deceased.
Each affected family is set to receive a 50kg bag of rice, among other essential items and services to assist with the funeral arrangements.
Minister Garwe also said Government was monitoring the condition of those injured in the crash and wished them a full and speedy recovery.
“The entire nation joins in mourning the 17 lives lost and continues to offer thoughts and prayers to the families affected, as well as hope for the recovery of those still in hospital,” he said.
