Deputy Agriculture Minister Davis Marapira's divorce from Sibusisiwe Melody Marapira (née Mutendi), daughter of Zion Christian Church (ZCC) Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi, has become the latest high-profile court battle to expose the vast fortunes accumulated by Zimbabwe's political and business elite.

Court papers reveal an estate that includes luxury vehicles, properties in Zimbabwe and South Africa, and an undisclosed number of farms, once again showing how divorce proceedings often become one of the few public windows into the private wealth of influential Zimbabweans.

Marapira's case joins a growing list of high-profile divorces that have laid bare multimillion-dollar property portfolios, luxury vehicles, companies and foreign assets.

1. Davis Marapira and Sibusisiwe Melody Marapira (née Mutendi)

The Deputy Agriculture Minister is contesting the distribution of assets during his divorce, arguing that property acquired through Government, political connections and his political party should not form part of the matrimonial estate.

Court papers list five luxury vehicles, properties in Borrowdale and South Africa and an undisclosed number of farms among the assets under dispute.

Marapira has instead proposed that his estranged wife receive a fully furnished apartment in Pretoria, South Africa, a four-bedroom house in Defe, Gokwe, and an industrial property in Masvingo.

2. Wicknell Chivayo and Sonja Louise Madzikanda

Businessman Wicknell Chivayo's maintenance dispute with former partner Sonja Louise Madzikanda exposed one of Zimbabwe's most extravagant lifestyles.

Court documents showed Madzikanda sought US$25 million for child maintenance, US$40,000 monthly spousal maintenance, a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Lamborghini Urus, Mercedes-Maybach, luxury homes and company shares.

The matter was eventually settled after Chivayo agreed to pay US$5 million towards child maintenance.

3. Bona Mugabe and Simbarashe Chikore

The divorce between Bona Mugabe, daughter of former President Robert Mugabe, and former Air Zimbabwe pilot Simbarashe Chikore exposed one of the country's largest known family fortunes.

Court papers listed 25 properties, 21 farms, an US$8 million mansion in Dubai, luxury vehicles, farming equipment and substantial foreign currency holdings.

The disclosed estate was estimated to be worth nearly US$80 million, although Chikore argued the assets represented only a fraction of the family's wealth.

4. Ignatius Chombo and Marian Chombo

Former Local Government Minister Ignatius Chombo's divorce from Marian Chombo revealed an extensive property empire accumulated over decades.

The estate included dozens of houses and commercial properties across Zimbabwe, multiple farms, safari lodges, mining interests, company shareholdings, luxury vehicles, farming equipment and properties in South Africa.

The case remains one of Zimbabwe's biggest matrimonial property disputes.

5. Phillip Chiyangwa and Elizabeth Chiyangwa

Businessman Phillip Chiyangwa's divorce from Elizabeth Chiyangwa also opened the doors to one of Zimbabwe's largest private fortunes.

Court proceedings detailed an estate comprising more than 50 properties, numerous farms, over 40 companies, luxury vehicles and a 43-room mansion.

The proceedings became one of Zimbabwe's most closely followed divorce cases because of the sheer scale of the assets involved.

A rare glimpse behind closed doors

While these cases were all fought over the division of matrimonial property, they also became rare public records documenting the wealth of some of Zimbabwe's best-known politicians, businesspeople and public figures.

For many Zimbabweans, divorce proceedings have increasingly become one of the few occasions where luxury homes, farms, foreign properties, companies, vehicles and other high-value assets are disclosed in open court, offering an uncommon glimpse into fortunes that would otherwise remain private.
