Caledonia Finds 510,000oz Gold Resource at Motapa

Caledonia Mining Corporation has announced a maiden mineral resource estimate of 510,000 ounces of gold at its 100%-owned Motapa property in Zimbabwe, strengthening the company's long-term plans to potentially integrate the project with its neighbouring Bilboes gold development.

The resource comprises 379,000 ounces of measured and indicated resources from 7.8 million tonnes grading 1.51 grams per tonne of gold, and a further 131,000 ounces of inferred resources from 2.7 million tonnes grading 1.48 grams per tonne.

The company said the estimate, based on exploration undertaken between 2023 and 2025, represents the first publicly disclosed mineral resource for Motapa and provides a foundation for evaluating future development options.

Caledonia spent US$7.084 million on exploration at Motapa over the three years, while the property was acquired in November 2022 for US$8.25 million in cash and loan notes. The company said the combined exploration and acquisition cost was approximately US$40.45 per measured and indicated ounce.

Caledonia chief executive Mark Learmonth said the maiden resource represented an important milestone and demonstrated the value generated by the company's exploration programme.

“The maiden MRE at Motapa is a significant milestone for Caledonia and demonstrates the value created through our exploration activities over the past two years,” Learmonth said.

The significance of the discovery extends beyond Motapa itself because the property lies immediately adjacent to Caledonia's Bilboes Gold Project, which is currently being developed.

Learmonth said the acquisition of Motapa should be viewed in the context of the company's ownership of Bilboes, where first gold production is expected in late 2028.

“The identification of 379,000 ounces in the measured and indicated mineral resource categories, together with a further 131,000 ounces in the inferred mineral resource category, demonstrates the value created by the exploration work completed to date,” he said.

The company believes the proximity of the two properties could eventually allow them to form part of a larger mining operation, although Caledonia stressed that significant technical and economic work remains before any development decision can be made.

“This maiden mineral resource estimate supports our view that the combined Bilboes and Motapa properties may ultimately support a larger operation and/or extend the current planned production profile for Bilboes of 1.5 million ounces over a 10.8-year life of mine,” Learmonth said.

“While considerable work remains to be completed, including further exploration, metallurgical test work, technical studies and economic evaluation, the proximity of the two properties presents a compelling long-term opportunity.”

Bilboes is currently planned to produce 1.5 million ounces of gold over a 10.8-year mine life, according to the company's feasibility studies.

Motapa's maiden resource is predominantly located at Motapa North, immediately adjacent to Bilboes. The property contains three principal shear zones — Motapa North, Motapa Central and Motapa South — but the latest resource was based principally on drilling at Motapa North.

The exploration programme between 2023 and 2025 focused on sulphide mineralisation beneath historic open pits at Motapa North.

Importantly, the latest resource does not include results from Caledonia's 2026 exploration programme. The company said exploration this year has continued at Motapa North and expanded to Motapa South and Motapa Central.

This leaves room for the resource base to grow as additional drilling and geological work is completed.

The resource estimate includes 52,000 ounces classified as measured, 327,000 ounces as indicated and 131,000 ounces as inferred. The company used a 0.5 grams per tonne cut-off grade and a gold price assumption of US$3,000 an ounce in its assessment of reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction.

Caledonia cautioned, however, that mineral resources are not mineral reserves and do not have demonstrated economic viability. In particular, there is no guarantee that inferred resources will eventually be upgraded into higher-confidence categories or converted into mineable reserves.

Learmonth said Caledonia's immediate priority remained the development of Bilboes.

“Our immediate priority remains bringing Bilboes into production on schedule, with first gold expected in late 2028,” he said.

“At the same time, we expect to continue exploration at Motapa during the Bilboes construction period.”

The Motapa discovery gives Caledonia another potential source of growth around a project that is already being advanced towards production, while the ongoing exploration programme could determine whether the newly identified 510,000 ounces represents only the beginning of a larger resource base.
