Irish Minister Neale Richmond arrives in Zimbabwe to strengthen ties, focus on health and education

Ireland’s Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond, touched down in Zimbabwe yesterday as part of a strategic African tour aimed at bolstering trade, development cooperation, and diaspora engagement. His visit follows a stop in Zambia and precedes his participation in the G20 Development Working Group ministerial meeting in South Africa later this week.

Richmond is scheduled to meet with Zimbabwean political leaders, diaspora representatives, and Irish development partners. Discussions will focus on trade, health, and education, aligning with Ireland’s commitment to "those furthest behind" in global development.

“Ireland is committed to building and strengthening our trade and development relations throughout Africa. Our continued cooperation, especially during times of crisis, has been warmly received,” said Richmond.

The minister will tour Chegutu District Hospital to assess Irish-funded programs, including an HIV treatment clinic and a maternal and neonatal ward.

Meetings with NGOs like SERVE and the Global Fund will highlight Ireland’s support for Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.

“The work of Irish Aid and partners like Build It International delivers real change. I look forward to seeing these results firsthand.”

The visit dovetails with Richmond’s role at the upcoming G20 Ministerial Meeting in South Africa, where he will advocate for equitable development policies in Africa.”
