A Harare man on Thursday approached the Harare Civil Court seeking a protection order against his wife, accusing her of infidelity, emotional abuse, and denial of conjugal rights, but the court dismissed the application due to lack of evidence.
Abraham Silundika told magistrate Ms Meenal Narotam that his wife, Ester Shoko, was cheating on him and frequently insulted him, claiming he was unemployed and sexually inadequate.
“I found messages of infidelity, that’s why I am here. I want a divorce because I can’t continue staying with her,” said Silundika.
“She insults me, saying I have a small manhood and that I am jobless. She also harasses me when she denies me conjugal rights. We last had sex seven months ago. We are now living like brother and sister in our own house. I can’t stay with such a person.”
In response, Shoko denied the allegations and accused Silundika of being the abuser.
“I dispute everything he is saying. He is trying to cover up for the abuse he puts me through,” she said.
“He urinates on the sofas, refuses to bathe, and still expects conjugal rights. I have talked to him about it, but he doesn’t listen. Instead, he threatened to damage my property.”
Shoko told the court she fled their home with the children after Silundika allegedly threatened to stab her with a knife.
“I don’t have anywhere to go with the kids because he is threatening to kill me if I return,” she said.
“One time I went back to collect some clothes and discovered that US$2,800 was missing. He denies taking the money.”
After hearing both sides, magistrate Narotam dismissed Silundika’s application, stating that he had failed to present evidence to support his claims of harassment or abuse.
