Police in Harare have launched a manhunt for a gang of eight armed robbers who raided a church in Belvedere and fled with US$8,000 in cash and a congregant’s vehicle.

According to Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the robbery occurred in the early hours of Sunday, May 11, 2025.

“Police in Harare are investigating a case of robbery which occurred at a church along Hudson Avenue, Belvedere at around 0030 hours,” said Nyathi. “Eight unknown suspects gained entry into the church premises and attacked a security guard and a congregant who was having prayers before ransacking the church’s offices where they stole US$8 000 cash.”

The suspects fled the scene using a silver Toyota IST, registration number ACT 8786, which belonged to the congregant.

In a separate incident later that day, three armed men carried out a daylight robbery at a bar located at the corner of 13th Avenue and Robert Mugabe Way in Bulawayo.

The suspects struck around midday while bar staff were counting the day’s takings. They held employees at gunpoint before escaping with approximately US$4 300.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that may assist in locating the suspects in both cases to contact their nearest police station.
