Miner endures 4-day ordeal in shaft

A 22-year-old man spent four days trapped in a 100-metre deep mine shaft in Silobela.

The facts are that Rania Moyo and two of his workmates entered the Velocity 36 Mine shaft around 5am last Thursday.

The shaft started collapsing and his two workmates managed to get around the initial block to reach the entrance before a big boulder fell and blocked the opening, trapping Moyo inside.

Over the four days before he was saved, Moyo survived on soil which he would eat to regain energy.

After being saved on Monday, Moyo was taken to Silobela District Hospital for a check-up and was given boosters to regain his energy. He was discharged on the same day and is recovering from home.

Kwekwe District Civil Protection Unit chairperson Fortune Mpungu thanked the Ministry of Mines, police, small scale miners and the community who came to rescue Moyo.

“This incident showed everyone that a community comes together in times of need and they assist each other,” he said.
