A fair portion of funds meant for devolution must be set aside for women empowerment projects since women spent most of their time doing unpaid work, the Zimbabwe Women Parliamentary Caucus (ZWPC) said.
Unpaid work according to the United Nations, refers to household chores like cooking, fetching firewood and taking care of children and the elderly in the home among other forms of work,
Globally, over 76 percent of women are involved in unpaid work and as such, society must prioritise them when it comes to devolution funds, said Women’s Parliamentary Caucus chairperson Goodlucky Kwaramba.
“In all societies, women still carry out a greater part of work responsibilities, especially in the areas of water and energy provision for the household as well as caring for children, the terminally ill and the elderly,” said Kwaramba.
She added that ZWPC’s 4Rs principle: Recognise, Reduce, Redistribute and Represent seeks to address the issues of unpaid care and domestic work.
