Byo suburbs go dry

The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has said water supplies for suburbs supplied by the Tuli Reservoir will not have water until further notice as the local authority fixes a burst pipe that connects Ncema and Fernhill Pump Stations.

The areas were already under a 72-hour water shedding regime, which will immediately be suspended, according to BCC.

Acting Town Clerk Sikhangele Zhou said in a statement that there would be no water in the following suburbs: “Lochview, Sunninghill, Marlands, Glencoe, Riverside, Waterford, Manningdale, Willsgrove, Buenavista, Douglasdale, Fortunes Gate, Selborne Park, Matsheumhlope, Esigodini, Imbizo Barracks, Parklands, Khumalo, Queens Park, Suburbs, Mahatshula, Woodville, Kingsdale and Killarney."

The statement said there would be water supply interruptions “to all areas fed by the Tuli Reservoir. This is due to a burst which occurred on the clear water line supplying the Tuli reservoir between Ncema and Fernhill Pump Stations”.

The council statement added: “The City of Bulawayo will temporarily suspend the current 72-hour water shedding programme in the Tuli Reservoir zone until the burst pipe is repaired. Residents are advised that supplies will be restored once the repair works have been completed and pumping has resumed and the Tuli Reservoir has been raised to acceptable levels.”

Council urged residents to conserve water and keep taps turned off in case the repair work is completed sooner.

The city of Bulawayo has always experienced water supply problems with the local authority and government coming up with a coterie of measures to arrest the challenges.

The Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project, which has since been taken over by the government, has already seen commencement of work on the Gwai-Shangani water pipeline and the Nyamandlovu Aquifer water project, which on completion is expected to enhance water supply in Zimbabwe’s second largest city of Bulawayo by providing 20 million litres of water daily.
