Four members of the Craneborne Neighborhood Watch Committee, who were on patrol and fatally assaulted a man who had gone there to visit his uncle, because they did not believe him, have appeared in court for murder.
Donald Jamela, 69, Tianshe Jamela, 27, Thembalamme Jamela, 28 and Roy Mujaho, 29 were before the Harare Magistrates' Court charged with murder.
The State, through prosecutor Zebediah Bofu, alleges that on May 1, 2023, the now-deceased, Itai Mwandicheya a mentally-challenged man, left Chinhoyi for Harare to visit his uncle, one Ozias Daka who resides at number 60 Sturgees Road, Cranborne, Harare.
When he got to the house it was around 2300 hours. He knocked at the gate but did not get any response hence he went to a vending stall at the intersection of Bidulph and Chiremba Road, Cranborne, Harare where he sought shelter for the night.
At around 0100 hours, the now-deceased was approached by the accused persons who were on patrol since they are members of the Craneborne Neighborhood Watch Committee and they interrogated him.
The now-deceased said that he had visited his uncle, Daka at number 60 Sturges but they did not believe it. Instead, they assaulted him with open hands and button sticks all over his body and head, accusing him of being a thief.
After they realised that he was now injured, they contacted Daka who confirmed that the now-deceased was his nephew.
The accused took the now-deceased to Ozias’s place and dropped him there.
On May 2, 2023, the now-deceased went back to Kwekwe to visit his aunt whom he told that he had been assaulted by members of neighbourhood watch committee in Craneborne, Harare.
On May 5, 2023, the now-deceased succumbed to death due to the injuries he had sustained in Harare after being assaulted by the four.
The four appeared before magistrate Munashe Chibanda who gave them ZWL$150 000 bail each.
They will appear in court on August 31 pending indictment.
