A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to an effective eight months in prison by the Mutare Magistrates’ Court after he assaulted a police officer, took his baton stick and fled while allegedly carrying passengers for reward in a private vehicle.
Brendon Tsakatsa appeared before a Mutare magistrate facing charges of assault, theft and operating a non-public service vehicle for reward.
The court heard that at around 4pm on July 6, 2026, police officers on patrol spotted Tsakatsa loading passengers into his Mazda Familiar at an undesignated pick-up point in Mutare.
When the officers approached him, Tsakatsa allegedly assaulted one of them before speeding off in the vehicle.
During the scuffle, he allegedly took the officer’s baton stick.

Police later spotted Tsakatsa and arrested him for allegedly carrying passengers for reward in a vehicle that was not registered for public service.
The Mazda Familiar was subsequently impounded.
Tsakatsa was convicted on all three counts.
He was sentenced to eight months in prison for assaulting a police officer, 30 days for stealing the baton stick and a further 30 days for operating a non-public service vehicle for reward.
The court suspended two months of the sentence on condition of good behaviour, leaving him to serve an effective eight months in prison.
