A Harare man appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court this week facing two counts of assault after he allegedly attacked two prison officers during separate incidents.
Francis Machoba appeared before magistrate Lynne Chinzou and pleaded not guilty. His age was not disclosed.
The State alleges that the first incident occurred on May 14, 2026, around 2pm when Machoba went to prison officer Paul Tadiwanashe Mutizirwa’s workplace carrying an empty beer bottle.

According to prosecutor Memory Ncube, Machoba allegedly confronted Mutizirwa, accusing him of touching his wife at Athlone Shops. He allegedly picked up stones and threw them at the officer before hurling the bottle at his face.
Mutizirwa reportedly alerted his superiors, who called the police. Machoba was arrested and Mutizirwa later filed a formal complaint at Rhodesville Police Station. The court heard that he was referred to hospital for assessment but did not receive treatment.
The second charge arose when prison officer Prince Imbayago and colleagues went to assist in arresting Machoba after being informed of the alleged assault.
The State alleges that Machoba resisted arrest and bit Imbayago once on the chin during the struggle. Imbayago subsequently reported the matter to Rhodesville Police Station.
