Zimbabwe's FIDE Master Roy Mwadzura was one of the biggest success stories at the 2026 African Individual Chess Championships after producing impressive performances in both the classical and blitz events in Jwaneng, Botswana.
Mwadzura finished with 5 points from 9 games in the Open section, gaining 14 Elo rating points in his first appearance at the continental championship. His biggest achievement came in the second round when he defeated reigning Africa Zone 4.5 champion International Master Andrew Kayonde of Zambia, despite being rated 124 points lower.
The Zimbabwean also held Namibia's IM Dante Beukes to a draw and claimed victories over players from Sudan and Mozambique before ending the tournament against South Africa's IM Caleb Levitan.
Mwadzura continued his fine form in the Blitz competition, where he finished sixth with 6 points from 9 rounds. His victories included a memorable win over seven-time African champion Grandmaster Bassem Amin of Egypt.

Zimbabwe also celebrated a strong performance from women's top player Tanaka Dziyanzi, who finished joint fourth in the Ladies section with 5.5 points from 9 games. She won five matches and recovered well from defeats to finish the tournament with an important victory over Kenya's WFM Elizabeth Cassidy Maina.
National Ladies Champion Christine Makwena faced a difficult tournament but remained determined throughout. She finished with 4.5 points after recording three wins and three draws. Despite describing the event as below her expectations, she said she would use the experience to improve her game.
Zimbabwe Chess Federation National Teams and Technical Director Kudakwashe Sibanda praised the team's efforts.
"We are proud of Roy, Tanaka and Christine for representing Zimbabwe well. Roy's results against top players and Tanaka's strong finish show that Zimbabwean chess is growing. We believe they will continue to improve and achieve even greater success," said Sibanda.
