Lotshe Mangena Charged After School Rugby Incident

Bulawayo businessman Lotshe Yuri Rodgers Mangena has appeared before the Harare Magistrates Court facing charges of pointing a firearm and assault following an incident at a schools’ rugby match in Harare.

Mangena, 50, who is the son of national hero Alfred Nikita Mangena and has been involved in several business ventures, including the operation of the Matopos Sailing Club, appeared before magistrate Ruth Moyo and was granted US$100 bail.

Prosecutors allege that the incident occurred on Saturday during a rugby fixture between Eaglesvale College and Christian Brothers College (CBC) at Eaglesvale College in Willowvale.

According to the State, tensions escalated after Eaglesvale secured victory through a late penalty. It is alleged that Mangena, together with other CBC supporters, entered the field in protest as emotions boiled over.

He is also accused of assaulting a 16-year-old Form Four pupil, allegedly striking the teenager once in the face. The boy reportedly sustained no visible injuries and was said to be in a stable condition.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed Mangena's arrest and said the firearm allegedly used in the incident has been seized as investigations continue.

The case has attracted national attention, with the Sports and Recreation Commission expressing concern over the events and reiterating the importance of maintaining safety, discipline and sportsmanship at school sporting competitions.

Mangena is expected to return to court as investigations continue.
