Harare Progresses with Water Infrastructure Upgrades

The City of Harare, in collaboration with Helcraw Water, has successfully rolled out a prepaid water meter installation programme across several suburbs. The initiative is currently being implemented in Avondale West, Sunridge, and sections of Mabelreign and Greencroft.

While the project marks a significant shift in the city’s utility management, Ward 17 Mt Pleasant Councillor Happymore Gotora noted that the transition has faced some initial hurdles.

“Residents have a lot of questions, a lot of issues. We have a meeting on the 28th where I have invited the engineers from Helcraw and Harare Water to explain to residents and answer some questions that they might have, so that we may have a smooth flow of this programme,” he explained.

Councillor Gotora emphasised that the programme is generally progressing well, with engineers actively addressing technical challenges as they arise.

In addition to the metering project, the council has launched a pipe replacement scheme in Sentosa to modernise the aging network. This move is aimed at curbing the frequent service disruptions that have plagued the area.

“As you are aware, we have had a problem of continuous burst pipes, which have been affecting water supply. So coming in with the issue of pipe replacement will enhance water supply in the area and will ensure minimal burst water pipes to reduce non-revenue water,” Clr Gotora said.
