
Young Zimbabwean chess player Tariro Talent Nota secured a silver medal at the 16th African Youth Chess Championships held in Harare in December 2025 competing in the Under-8 Girls category and where she finished at position two with 7 points out of 9 rounds.
Her achievement has drawn recognition from the Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF), with Executive Director Tapiwa Gora noting that her performance reflects both individual effort and the broader potential of young Zimbabwean players.
“Her performance demonstrates the discipline, focus, and strategic brilliance we aim to cultivate in all our youth,” Gora said.
In response to her success, the ZCF reaffirmed its commitment to supporting young players. ZCF spokesperson said, “Tariro’s silver medal is a symbol of hope for Zimbabwean chess. We are proud to support her journey and provide resources that will allow her to excel both in school and on the chessboard.”

The federation also emphasized that her achievement highlights the importance of encouraging more girls to participate in the sport, ensuring equal opportunities for all young players.As part of this commitment, the ZCF awarded Tariro a scholarship covering her primary school fees and uniforms for four years.
Beyond individual recognition, the federation is taking steps to support chess at the grassroots level. Tariro’s school, Haigh Park Primary School, received five chess boards to enhance the learning environment for students interested in the game.
ZCF also commended Mrs. Chipesa, the school’s Teacher in Charge of Chess, and Cephas Mukono, Tariro’s coach, for their role in identifying and guiding young talent.
Expressing the family’s pride, Tariro’s mother said, “Am so happy with gold medal won by Tariro and she made us happy as the whole family. We will keep on supporting her until she achieves her goals.”
