A 59-year-old domestic worker has been sentenced to prison after stealing more than US$80 000 from her employer in Harare with the help of accomplices.
Sarah Matemarunda was convicted by the Harare Magistrates’ Court and sentenced to 36 months in prison, with two months suspended, after being found guilty of theft involving large sums of cash in multiple foreign currencies.
The court heard that Matemarunda worked together with gardener Milton Mudimu and two other accomplices who are still at large to carry out the theft on August 10, 2025.
According to the State, the victim had travelled to his farm in Darwendale when he received a call from Matemarunda claiming that Mudimu had failed to report for duty.

Mudimu was later intercepted while attempting to flee to South Africa and allegedly implicated Matemarunda as the mastermind behind the theft.
Authorities recovered US$1,239, R1,360, 100 yuan, five dirhams, 50 rupees and £10 hidden in Matemarunda’s room.
Police say investigations are continuing as two other suspects linked to the case remain at large.
