He rose to prominence in the 1990s after building one of the largest African-controlled business conglomerates of its time through Africa Resources Limited. His interests spanned mining, manufacturing, finance, and other sectors, with flagship assets including Shabanie Mashaba Mines, once Zimbabwe’s sole asbestos producer.

Mawere’s career was later overshadowed by prolonged legal and political disputes with the Zimbabwean government, which took control of several of his companies in the early 2000s. He consistently denied wrongdoing and maintained that his assets were unlawfully seized, leading to years of litigation in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

In recent years, Mawere remained a controversial and polarising figure, frequently commenting on economic governance, property rights, and investment issues in Zimbabwe and the wider region.

Formal statements from family members and authorities were still awaited at the time of publication. More details will follow.
