Zimbabwean combat sports standout Simbarashe “The Hawk” Hokonya, who has competed with distinction in both professional boxing and the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC), is recovering from a serious leg injury sustained in an accident.
The accident happened on December 18 in Midrand, South Africa, while he was on his way home from a training session. It involved a motor cycle he was riding and a motor vehicle.
“I was forced to avoid the car in front of me and in so doing, lost control, hit the pavement and rammed onto a tree. I had a serious splint on my leg for which I’m undergoing medical treatment,” he said.
The injury has temporarily halted Hokonya’s training and competitive activity, forcing him to focus on rehabilitation while grappling with mounting medical and physiotherapy costs that have limited his ability to work.
Friends have since set up a BackABuddy fundraising page to assist with his recovery costs. Hokonya has expressed gratitude for the support, noting that any contribution, or even sharing the appeal, would be greatly appreciated as he works towards a full recovery and eventual return to competition.
“While I’m grateful to be healing, this time has come with unexpected costs, especially for physiotherapy and recovery support, and I’m unable to work as I normally would.

“Any contribution, no matter how small, would truly help, and even sharing this post or keeping me in your prayers means a lot,” he posted on his social media spaces.
Hokonya has long been regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s most versatile fighters.
In professional boxing where he debuted against Alfred Kashiri at Magamba Hall a decade ago, the 27 year-old southpaw went on to win five and drew six of his total fights on the domestic scene, thereby earning respect for his technical skill, durability and consistency.
In mixed martial arts he has represented the country on the continent’s biggest stage through Africa’s premier MMA promotion, the EFC.
His last assignment was when he headlined the card in the 2025 PFL Africa Semi-final at Kigali’s BK Arena, Rwanda, and battled it out with South African Nkosi Ndebele (10-3)
The media labelled the bantamweight contest “a razor-close bout worthy of a PFL Africa main event” which the Zimbabwean, however, lost on points.
