Zimbabwe’s fast-rising mixed martial arts star Simbarashe “The Hawk” Hokonya is gearing up for the biggest fight of his career — the Professional Fighters League Africa tournament in Rwanda on October 18, where he will carry the nation’s hopes on his shoulders.
Hawk earned his ticket to Kigali after defeating a top-rated South African opponent in a thrilling qualifier earlier this year, extending his undefeated streak to six fights.
The 27-year-old fighter now has his sights set on a seventh straight victory — one that could propel him into the elite ranks of continental MMA.
Speaking at a send-off press conference in Harare hosted by the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board, he said representing Zimbabwe on such a prestigious stage is both an honour and a responsibility.
“I’m excited and proud to represent Zimbabwe. This opportunity from PFL Africa shows that our fighters have what it takes to compete internationally. Even though we lack some of the facilities and equipment other countries have, Zimbabweans have the heart and discipline to make it.”
Hawk’s journey into MMA began in 2015, after a stint in rugby and boxing under Box Africa, a stable based in the dormitory town of Chitungwiza. He later relocated to South Africa, where he honed his skills at GMF Gym, training alongside fellow Zimbabwean fighter Sylvester Chipfumbu and other African talents.
Chipfumbu, who was also present at the press conference, spoke glowingly of his teammate’s prospects in Kigali.

“Hawk has carried himself like a true champion from the first day he entered the cage. He’s strong, calculated, and mentally tough. On paper and in the cage, he’s the favourite to win this fight — and I believe he’ll go all the way to the PFL final in December.”
The ZNBWCB, which regulates combat sports in Zimbabwe, pledged its full support for Hokonya and other athletes representing the country on international platforms.
“We’re proud of Simbarashe’s achievements and wish him well as he heads to Rwanda,” said the board’s Chief Executive Officer, Priscilla Kadungure.
“With six undefeated fights, we believe his next bout will make it seven. The government is committed to ensuring that combat sports like MMA thrive in Zimbabwe.”
The Board also revealed plans to commission a multi-sport gym facility at the National Sports Stadium complex by early next year — a move expected to boost training opportunities for fighters preparing for regional and global competitions.
Hokonya will be up against South Africa’s Kosi Mthembu in what is already being billed as one of the most anticipated bouts of the PFL Africa card. A win would not only preserve his perfect record but also position him as one of the top African prospects for a global PFL contract.
“This is my moment,” he said with quiet confidence. “I’m not just fighting for myself — I’m fighting for every young Zimbabwean who dreams of making it in MMA. We’re going to show the continent what Zimbabwean fighters are made of.”
With his sights firmly set on Rwanda — and potentially the PFL finals in December — Simbarashe Hokonya stands on the brink of history, representing a new generation of Zimbabwean combat athletes ready to conquer the cage.
