The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) will host the 9th Edition of the UZ Annual Handball Tournament from 17 to 19 October 2025. The tournament will bring together teams from across the country, with more than 25 teams having already confirmed their participation.
The event continues to be recognised as the biggest and most reliable handball tournament in Zimbabwe, based on the number of participating teams. This year’s edition will also introduce a new Under 21 category, aimed at promoting the participation of young players.
UZ Wildcats head coach, Valentine Masaiti, said both the men’s and women’s teams are well prepared for the tournament.
“We are geared as always,” said Masaiti. “Our men’s team won last year and the ladies finished second. This year, we hope to retain the men’s trophy, while our ladies are determined to improve on their second place finish, building on our recent victories at tournaments held in Kwekwe and Bulawayo.”

For the first time, the tournament has secured a sponsor, ZB Financial Holdings, which has partnered with the organisers to support prizes and medals for teams and individual players.
Zimbabwe Handball Federation president, Taurai Muberekwa, described the development as a milestone for the sport.
“This is a milestone achievement that we, as an association, have been looking for,” said Muberekwa. “We want to say cheers to the organisers of the UZ tournament for engaging and successfully sealing the deal with ZB Financial Holdings. Having them come on board shows that they are confident in us as an association. It also demonstrates that they have recognised the level of organisation and improved professionalism within our game. We are hoping more corporate partners and individuals will come on board to support handball.”
Manyame Falcons HC captain, Shemaiah Bota, said his team has been preparing thoroughly for the tournament and will be focusing on their Under 21 squad this year.
“Our team has undergone intense and focused preparation leading up to this year’s tournament,” said Bota. “We have had regular training sessions that emphasised fitness, tactical awareness, and team chemistry. We also played a friendly match to fine tune our strategies and identify areas for improvement. Mentally, we have worked on building confidence and unity among players. Though this year we are focusing on our junior squad, the Under 21s, our expectations are high. We aim to compete with discipline, give our best in every game, and ultimately challenge for the top position. Most importantly, we want to represent our team and supporters with pride and determination.”
