In a major boost for pediatric healthcare, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has resumed its open-heart surgery program, with 12 children scheduled for life-saving operations this week.

The initiative, which kicked off this Monday, is part of a specialized cardiac intervention program aimed at treating congenital heart defects in children. A team of local and visiting Egyptian cardiothoracic surgeons is leading the procedures, supported by the Zimbabwean government and international partners.

ZBC News spoke to parents at the hospital, many of whom have waited years for this critical medical intervention.

Mrs. Dadirai Ndawala Masiiwa shared her daughter’s struggle: “She was diagnosed at three and is now nearly six. She gets breathless quickly and struggles to walk. Tomorrow’s surgery gives us hope.”

Ms. Chipo Maremera recounted her son’s condition: “He has a hole in his heart. Right now, he’s in the theater—we pray for a successful operation.”

Ms Vimbainashe Chakanungwa, whose three-year-old daughter has been battling poor health since 2023, said, “SheMs. hasn’t been gaining weight. This surgery could change her life.”

Last year’s surgical camp recorded a 100% success rate, with 10 children receiving free corrective heart surgeries. This year’s program continues that legacy, offering free operations to ease financial burdens on families.
