Zim reports 4,064 Malaria Cases, 466 Dog Bites

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has reported a total of 4,064 malaria cases, six malaria-related deaths, and 466 dog bite incidents across Zimbabwe in its latest Weekly Disease Surveillance Report for the week ending 15 June 2025.

The Ministry said Mashonaland Central Province remained the hardest hit by malaria, recording 2,225 cases out of the national total.

The province also accounted for five of the six reported deaths, with two from Mbire District and one each from Bindura, Guruve, and Mazowe. The sixth death was recorded in Gokwe North District, Midlands Province.

“Children under the age of five accounted for 495 of the reported malaria cases,” said the Ministry. “Mashonaland West followed with 610 cases during the same period.”

The cumulative malaria statistics for 2025 have reached 116,062 cases and 328 deaths nationwide.

On cholera, the Ministry recorded two suspected cases in UMP District, Mashonaland East Province, with no deaths reported. This brings the cumulative total for the year to 543 suspected cases, 83 confirmed cases, 10 suspected deaths, and 13 confirmed deaths.

Dog bite cases continue to pose a serious public health threat, with 466 new cases reported during the surveillance period.

“Of these cases, 99 people were bitten by vaccinated dogs, 88 by unvaccinated dogs, while 279 were bitten by dogs whose vaccination status could not be established,” stated the Ministry

Masvingo Province recorded the highest number of dog bite cases at 94, followed by Mashonaland East with 68. The cumulative national total for dog bite cases in 2025 now stands at 14,422.

The Ministry urged the public to take preventive health measures and report all cases to health authorities promptly.
