The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested a Karoi man on allegations of defrauding a prospective miner of US$15 800 after allegedly claiming he could facilitate the registration of a gold mining claim.
ZACC said the suspect, Dias Chawarira, allegedly misrepresented to Ignatious Shonhiwa that he could facilitate the pegging, surveying and registration of a gold mining claim in Karoi.
Acting on the alleged misrepresentation, Shonhiwa reportedly paid Chawarira a facilitation fee of US$15 800, for which the suspect issued a receipt acknowledging payment.
According to ZACC, Chawarira later demanded additional funds, claiming the money was needed to secure approvals from the relevant authorities.
Investigations allegedly established that no such payments were required for the registration process and that the government officials purportedly linked to the arrangement were unaware of it.

Chawarira appeared before the Chinhoyi Magistrates' Court, where he was granted bail of US$100. He was remanded out of custody to August 13, 2026.
Meanwhile, the arrest comes days after ZACC announced the arrest of Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) data capturer clerks Tinotenda Maningi and Chrison Chipanda over an alleged vehicle licensing scam involving more than US$1 million.
The two are accused of working with Ebenezzer Zvidza and Emmanuel Mushonga, who are still at large, to manipulate the VID's computerised licensing system and fraudulently issue learner's licences and Certificates of Competency to about 500 people who had not undergone the mandatory competency tests.
Investigators also allege that the suspects unlawfully accessed user accounts belonging to other VID officers to process fraudulent transactions and conceal their identities while generating fake payment receipts and soliciting bribes ranging from US$200 to more than US$500 per applicant.
The accused appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Court on July 30, 2026, and were remanded in custody to August 4, 2026.
