Former Pretoria City Seventh-Day Adventist church treasurer Memory Mutsika, 43, was convicted by the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court for 128 counts of theft and sentenced to three years in prison for stealing tithes from the church.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson for Pretoria, Ms Lumka Mahanjana, said between 2012 and 2015, Mutsika transferred more than R800 000 of the money received from the tithe and offerings to her bank account.

Mutsika pleaded guilty to the charges and asked for a non-custodial sentence so she could pay restitution to the SDA church over a period of five years.

The State opposed Mutsika’s submission saying she had expressed the same intent after her conviction in March but had not backed it with action as she had not made any payment in the period since then.

The magistrate ruled that Mutsika had shown no remorse for betraying the trust placed in her and only stopped stealing because she was caught out.
