A 39-year-old DA Service Station employee, Ringisai Tagwirei of Zvishavane, appeared before Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court facing charges of theft after stealing over US$42 000 from his employer during the Christmas holiday.

Circumstances are that on December 24, 2023, Tagwirei was given the office keys by his supervisor to hand them over to the next shift.

Instead of following the procedure, he used the keys to enter the office, tampered with the CCTV system, and unlocked the safe to steal cash.

The theft was discovered the following morning when the supervisor returned for duty and found that Tagwirei did not hand over the keys.

The supervisor discovered the offence when he reviewed the CCTV footage.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of Tagwirei in Harare.

A Nissan AD, which Tagwirei had bought using the stolen money, was recovered.

The total amount stolen was US$42 557, and only US$5 000 was recovered.

Tagwirei was sentenced to 80 months’ imprisonment of which 18 months was suspended for five years.

A further 32 months was suspected on condition that he pays a sum of US$37 557 as restitution to the complainant.
