The death at a Harare private hospital of Tynwald Geography and Sociology A Level teacher Chamunorwa Rukwanha brings to seven the casualties from the accident that occurred at Pine Tree Hotel near Juliasdale along the Rusape-Nyanga road last month.

Rukwanha, who also taught Form Three Environmental Management, had been battling for life at Avenues Clinic where he was being treated for the injuries he sustained in the accident.

Six students, five female and one male died when the driver of the bus they were travelling on to a trip to Nyanga failed to negotiate a sharp curve and the vehicle veered off the road and overturned before landing on its roof.

The driver is believed to have been speeding.

Several students and teachers were injured in the accident.

The accident claimed the lives of Anesuishe Hove (14) of Bluffhill in Harare; Beyonce Guyo (15) of Madokero, Harare; Anita Manyuka (16) of Tynwald, Harare; Destiny Dziva (14) of Avondale, Harare; Kimberly Tarisai Mutusva of Chitepo Heights, Harare and the male student Craig Madanhire.

The six were buried side by side at Glen Forest Memorial Park in Harare.

Meanwhile, the driver of the bus, Chamunorwa Machimbidzofa, who had been on the run for over three weeks, was arrested in Harare yesterday, with sources close to the investigations saying he was not reporting for work and only surfaced after the Harare institution ceased his salary.

Confirming Machimbidzofa’s arrest, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “He did not cooperate with the police also after the accident and has been playing hide and seek. He is likely to face culpable homicide charges,” he said.

He added that Machimbidzofa was supposed to cooperate with the police by providing the relevant documents required when one is involved in the accident, in terms of the Road Traffic Act.

It is alleged that he would always refer police to his “lawyer” every time they tried to contact him.
