Former Chief Executive Officer of South African power utility Eskom, Matshela Koko, whose company Matshela Energy Limited had just inked a power purchasing agreement with Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), has been arrested by the neighbouring country’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Investigating Directorate.
The Authority arrested Matshela, his wife Mosima and his stepdaughter Koketso Choma on charges of corruption.
The charges against Matshela relate to a 2015 multibillion-rand contract Eskom entered into with Swiss engineering company Asea Brown Boveri (ABB).
ABB reportedly subcontracted Impulse International, a company where Choma was a shareholder. Choma received R30 million from the deal, with part of the money going to Mosima Koko.
The deal with ZETDC would pave way for the construction of a 100-megawatt solar plant in the Matabeleland South town of Gwanda.
