A rogue police officer recently appeared before the Harare Magistrate courts on initial remand in connection with an armed robbery which occurred in Belvedere, Harare, on February 26.
Constable Walter Chanhuwa was implicated by his accomplices leading to his arrest on March 8.
According to the police, Constable Chanhuwa and the other suspects identified as Harry Dzinwe,30, Tongai Chikumba,30, Walter Chanhuwa,41, and Egypt Musundire,30, stole property and cash valued at UD$7 650 and 5 000 Rupees.
“The four suspects who were using a Toyota Belta with no registration plates while armed with an unidentified pistol and iron bars, allegedly pounced at a house in Belvedere, where they attacked the complainants.
“Investigations done by ZRP Criminal Investigations Department Homicide led to the arrest of Dzingwe, Chikumba and Musundire who later implicated Constable Chanhuwa, a rogue police officer, currently on suspension for a case of unlawful possession of a pangolin, which led to his arrest on March 8 along Seke Road near Maruta shopping Centre," police said.
The suspects were remanded in custody to April 25.
The police warns armed robbery syndicates that the long arm of the law will catch up with them and the law will take its course.
The ZRP has also reiterated that it does not condone the involvement of errant police officers in criminal activities and will ensure that the law takes its course without fear or favour.
