Primary and Secondary Education Ministry’s Communications and Advocacy director, Taungana Ndoro, has spoken about the Ministry’s concern regarding prevalence of gang wars in Bulawayo.
His sentiments follow the case of a 17-year-old Hamilton High school student, Wayne Ndlovu, who was stabbed to death by another student of a nearby school, Founders.
Ndoro said the ministry is worried about the inter-turf wars that exist in schools despite the school system having an anti-bullying policy.
“It is very regrettable and unfortunate that this case happened outside the school. As a ministry, we have a very strong policy against gang-related violence within our schools.
“We have a very strict policy against bullying in our schools. That is why even corporal punishment was abolished.
“We are going to provide psychological support to all the learners that witnessed the violence that occurred outside the school resulting in loss of life. As a ministry, we would like to express our condolences to the family,” he said.
He also said that the case is now being handled by the relevant authorities since it is now a criminal case.
“The issue has transcended our ministry mandate and it is now a crime of murder, hence it will be handled by the courts and due processes will take course,” Ndoro added.
The suspect, who has since been remanded in custody to February 27, stabbed the deceased on Monday with a three-star okapi knife on the neck during the fight which occurred at the corner of Evesham Road and Plumtree Road.
He appeared at the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Courts where Ms Nomagugu Maphosa presided over the matter.
Meanwhile the victim’s father, Simiko Ndlovu, had earlier before burial approached Founders High School with an aim to have the funeral service held at the institution.
Though it could not be established at the time of going to press whether the school has consented to his request, his argument was that word the message would have been sent to would-be offenders on the consequences of violence.
The deceased was buried at Umvutsha cemetery on Thursday, February 16.
