Two armed robbers were yesterday beaten by angry residents in Beitbridge after they shot a man and robbed him of US$26 000 cash.
The victim was shot on the leg and, upon arrest, police recovered a pistol from the suspects.
Beitbridge police boss Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo confirmed the incident but said the names of the suspects were yet to be established.
“We thank the public for standing up against these armed robbers. Police were called and we have made arrests. There was mob justice and these robbers were severely beaten,” he said.
The suspects stole the victim’s car and attempted to drive away, but the victim fought them until the car crashed.
The two fired shots but missed until they ran out of ammunition and tried to run away on foot but members of the community chased and caught up with them.
The robbers tossed a satchel containing the loot into the air hoping to divert the mob which helped itself to the cash first, before meting instant justice on the suspects.
The victim and the two suspects were taken to hospital.
