Violent Hailstorm Devastates Masvingo; Emergency Halls Opened for Displaced Residents

A severe hailstorm accompanied by intense downpours swept through Masvingo on Monday evening, leaving behind widespread destruction, structural damage, and flash flooding across several residential areas.

The violent weather system, which struck shortly after 5:00 PM, tore roofs off homes, smashed glass windows, and destroyed property including sliding gates, solar panels, and dozens of parked vehicles. Preliminary assessments indicate that more than 60 houses suffered severe roof damage, leaving numerous families exposed to the elements overnight.

Masvingo Mayor Aleck Tabe described the aftermath as deeply distressing.

"The extent of the damage is significant and deeply distressing. Most concerning is that several families have been left with their homes exposed to the elements tonight," Mayor Tabe said in a public statement to residents.

In response to the crisis, city authorities have designated Mucheke Hall and Rujeko Hall as temporary emergency shelters. The facilities will provide safe accommodation for displaced families and secure storage for household belongings.

"Residents whose homes have been severely affected are encouraged to make use of these facilities while further assistance and assessments are being coordinated," Tabe advised.

The Masvingo City Council and the Masvingo District Civil Protection Unit (CPU) have deployed field teams to evaluate the full scope of the destruction to private property and municipal infrastructure.

Reassuring the public, Mayor Tabe emphasized that local authorities are actively coordinating with national emergency bodies and relevant stakeholders to expedite relief efforts.

"I wish to assure all residents that the city authorities are seized with this emergency," he stated, calling on the community to remain calm and prioritize safety. He also urged neighbors to assist vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities as relief operations continue
