ZIFA Overhauls National Sports Stadium Security, tighten the screws

 Just 48 hours after a huge turnout at the National Sports Stadium resulted in severe crowd control failure, Zimbabwe Football Association in conjunction with the government and the Sports and Recreation Commission  successfully overhauled the securoty systems at the facility to plug the leakage that resulted in the of a fan on September 28

Billed as the national team's homecoming show, the match between Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo was marred by exuberant fans who breached security systems to invade the pitch and celebrate the reopening of the refurbished National Sports Stadium.

DRC win the game 2-1 but not before a fan lost his lige in a melee that ensued at Gate 2 of the entry points.

In the eake kf the tragedy, ZIFA and their partners reportedly held marsthon .eetkngs to overhaul the whole security system around the match venue.

Resultantly there was was a refreshing amd successful security system in place on September 30

A revamped security framework saw the Zimbabwe Under-23 team host Mauritius fir CAF Under-23 AFCON qualifier in a safe, controlled, and thoroughly modernized environment.

The stark turnaround followed Monday night's heartbreaking incident near Gate 2, where severe bottlenecking, ticket scanning delays, and uncontrolled crowd pressure led to a chaotic stampede that tragically claimed the life of a male supporter.

The fatal incident prompted swift intervention from government ministers and the Zimbabwe Football Association, who pledged immediate operational corrections before fans returned to the giant facility.

 Determined to prevent any recurrence of Monday's disaster, security forces and stadium management deployed a robust crowd-management strategy for Wednesday's match.

Organizers strictly prohibited matchday ticket sales at the venue, restricting entry strictly to supporters holding pre-purchased digital tickets.

Law enforcement established multi-tiered security checkpoints hundreds of metres away from the main turnstiles to filter fan movements into orderly queues long before reaching the gates, while digital ticket scanning teams were doubled at all functional access points to eliminate turnstile congestion.

Supporters who attended Wednesday night's encounter expressed massive relief at the radical improvements in organization, security, and stadium upkeep.

Harare resident Farai Chihota noted that Monday was a terrifying ordeal where pushing and panic ended in tragedy, but commended organizers for taking decisive action, stating, "On Wednesday, the security officers were firm yet polite, the lines kept moving steadily, and the electronic ticket scanning took only a matter of seconds, which allowed families to feel completely safe inside the venue.

"Beyond the streamlined entry management, fans praised the enhanced physical infrastructure, including the newly restored concourse lighting, overall cleanliness, and fully functional restroom facilities.

Longtime supporter Blessing Gumbo emphasized that seeing organized security lanes and brightly lit concourses restored public confidence following Monday's trauma, adding, "Although the stadium was closed to full crowds for nearly seven years prior to these fixtures, Wednesday proved that local authorities can successfully maintain high-level, international safety standards when proper planning and technology are strictly enforced."
